Radioactive Waste Management consultant – Oxford and Warrington

Salary - £38K +

REF:BSN014

The successful candidate would take on technical leadership and business development role in the field of radioactive waste management research with emphasis on high-level radioactive waste and spent fuel (HLW/SF). In particular, the successful candidate would be responsible for managing a framework contract in support of NDA-RWMD concerned with research into the properties and long-term behaviour of high-level waste materials. This would involve acting as the principal point of contact for the company with RWMD in this area and working closely with sub-contractors to prepare proposals and deliver programmes of work to NDA. Sub-contractors may include UK Universities and commercial organisations in both UK and Western Europe.

The successful candidate will be involved in the design, implementation and delivery of a wide range of projects, including both experimental and some desk-based studies. In the field of HLW/SF research, experimental studies may be concerned with:

  • dissolution/surface evolution of (alpha-) radioactive materials (such as actinide oxides or actinide-bearing ceramics);
  • the dissolution and durability behaviour of irradiated (spent fuel) and high gamma activity (HLW glass) materials (static/dynamic testing);
  • exposure of these materials to solutions at elevated temperatures, pressure and/or gases;
  • examination of their physico-chemical composition and structure.

Desk-based studies may involve reviews, modelling studies or working with databases. There may also be opportunities for undertaking chemistry and radiochemistry studies (including sorption, solubility and diffusion experiments) and corrosion-related studies in the companies laboratory facilities.

Required competencies/experience:

• Very good First Degree or equivalent qualification in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline, and possibly a higher degree;
• Experience in the behaviour and durability of high-level wasteforms and/or spent fuel;
• Experience in delivering experimental and desk-based programmes of work to meet customer requirements;
• Experience in preparing technical proposals;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Numerate and computer literate;
• Technically able and innovative;
• Capable of dealing with real problems in a practical manner;
• Adaptable and able to work on a range of projects at the same time;
• An enthusiasm for interacting with customers and for solving their problems.

Experience in working with radioactive materials either in glove boxes or in a hot cell facility would be an advantage. Suitable candidates may have experience in undertaking research projects in an academic or industrial context.
