The government-backed scheme is expected to help 125,000 households upgrade to an energy efficient boiler, with an estimated 120,000 boiler engineers set to benefit from the scheme, the Times has reported.

And with British Gas recently announcing that it will match the £400 scrappage fee - allowing consumers to save £800 in total - there are sure to be plenty of people eager to cash in on the scheme.

Comparison website uSwitch.com has also issued advice to consumers to be sure they always go with a plumber who is Gas Safe registered, meaning 2010 is looking to be a busy year for those currently working in gas jobs, as well as for those considering joining the trade.
