The forthcoming boiler scrappage scheme is "not enough" to help UK households be more energy efficient, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) has warned.

While CIPHE chief executive Blane Judd welcomed the scheme, which was announced in the pre-Budget report 2009, he underlined the need for replacement boilers to be installed by registered heating or plumbing professionals.
He added that if the scheme is to be successful then it is imperative for as many as 125,000 homeowners being targeted by the scheme to receive more advice about how to reduce their energy consumption.
"Without issuing advice on the correct sizing of the boiler, installation of proper controls and the importance of regular maintenance to help reduce energy consumption, little will be achieved by simply replacing old boilers," he said.
