The £50 million scheme, which was unveiled by the Chancellor yesterday (December 9th), will aim to replace more than 100,000 ageing British boilers with newer, more energy-efficient models.
Some 4.5 million households could apply for grants worth up to £400 under the scheme, which is similar to the car scrappage programme launched last April.
Further, the initiative is expected to deliver a boost for British energy jobs, with around 60 per cent of boilers used in the UK being manufactured in this country.
An estimated 120,000 boiler engineers will benefit from the scheme, reports the Times, many of whom have been struggling because of a decline in orders stemming from the slowdown in the property market.
The boiler scrappage scheme will be open to households with G-rated boilers, which are less than 70 per cent efficient, if they replace them with an A-rated boiler.
