British Gas parent Centrica has won first place in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Online Awards UK 2009.

Conducted by communications consultancy Lundquist, the awards are an independent ranking of the best online CSR communications from the largest companies in the FTSE 100 index.

The CSR Online Awards is a research project initiated by Lundquist to stimulate debate about the potential of the web as a strategic tool for corporate responsibility and sustainability.

Centrica's website was ranked as the top performer due to high scores for interactivity and navigability, while it was also noted that the company dedicates ample space to CSR hot topics, stakeholders and its environmental commitment.

Simon Henderson, Centrica's director of corporate responsibility, said: "We've made significant strides forward in reporting across the business, so we're delighted that we have again been recognised for this."

Despite this, he added that the company is well aware that there is still much to do.
