Drilling in the Beryl field - the most challenging well ever drilled from the platform stopped in 2007 following unexpected difficulties.
However, detailed studies and analysis by ExxonMobil's onshore scientists and engineers have led to the development of new well plans, including starting work on drilling three wells on Beryl Alpha around the end of the year.
The Beryl rigs were built to handle 5,000 pounds-per-square-inch (psi) wells, but the first well planned requires new 10,000 psi equipment.
Upgrades are currently being made to the rigs to bring them into line with current regulations and to accommodate the additional pressure from the new rock formations being drilled.
ExxonMobil is responsible for approximately 10 per cent of the UK's total oil and gas production and has supplied the UK market with gas for over 30 years.
