The energy regulator Ofgem today (December 7th) warned power supply companies that they may be forced to pass on savings to consumers.

Alistair Buchanan, Ofgem chief executive, said: "Ofgem's role is to ensure that companies can invest, but do not use investment as a shameful excuse to overcharge consumers."

Ofgem has noted that wholesale energy prices fell in 2009, raising profitability for the energy suppliers to a five-year high.

Furthermore, the cost of buying wholesale gas for the big six energy companies - Centrica, Scottish & Southern Electricity, Scottish Power, RWE, E.ON and EDF- has fallen by an average of £60 per customer bill over the past six months, according to the regulator.

Ofgem is an independent body which aims to secure Britain's energy supplies by promoting competitive gas and electricity markets.
