Yesterday (December 3rd) Lord Mandelson detailed a plan for the North West and Yorkshire's civil nuclear industry.
Plans include a further £8 million investment, for the upgrading of laboratory facilities at Manchester University's Dalton Nuclear Institute and a Nuclear Low Carbon Economic Area in the North West and Yorkshire.
Lord Mandelson said: "We know that we have to make the transition to a low carbon future, and the government is determined to ensure that British businesses get the support they need."
The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) will now function in South Yorkshire, led by the University of Sheffield.
Rolls-Royce is set to play the role of lead industrial partner in what will be a combined partnership of both the University of Manchester and the University of Sheffield.
The NAMRC comes as a result of the Low Carbon Industrial Strategy and seeks to discover production techniques to make components in response to the demand for nuclear power stations.
Yorkshire Forward - the regional development agency for the Yorkshire & Humber region - has been integral in working with the government and Rolls-Royce on both of the investments.
